Free and open source alternatives to Mighty Networks

Discourse is the one option here that is both free and open source. Its pricing page offers a free hosted plan with unlimited members, 2 staff seats, 10 categories and 5 GB of storage, and states that the software itself is open source and free to run on your own server. Self-hosting means you handle the server, updates and backups yourself.

Patreon is free to start but takes 10% of what you earn. Mighty Networks has no free plan on its pricing page, only a 14-day trial, as covered in the Mighty Networks pricing breakdown. A wider list of no-cost options is on the page about free community platforms.

What Mighty Networks includes at the entry tier

  • Unlimited Spaces and members on every plan. Circle's Professional plan stops at 20 spaces and Heartbeat's Build plan at 350 members.
  • More included livestreaming at the entry tier. Launch includes 20 hours a month with 100 viewers; Circle Professional includes 10 hours.
  • Native iOS and Android apps for members on every plan, with your own branded apps available through Mighty Pro.
  • SOC 2 Type II listed on every plan, which matters when a board or employer asks for it.

Where Mighty Networks is the wrong choice

Mighty Networks is a poor fit in four cases. If you sell courses and need email marketing, funnels and a website from one vendor, Kajabi bundles those. If your budget is under $50 a month, Skool Hobby at $9 or Heartbeat Build at $49 cost less than Launch, at the price of higher fees. If you need HIPAA compliance, Mighty's help center says it is not offered, so none of the consumer community platforms here should be assumed to fit without written confirmation. And if integrations matter, Zapier and the Admin API start on Mighty's Scale Plan at $215 a month.

Which alternative to pick by type of community

  • An established group moving off social media: Mighty Networks Launch or Circle Professional. They are within $10 a month of each other with the same 2% fee.
  • A coach testing a first paid group: Skool Hobby, then Skool Pro once monthly sales pass about $1,270, where the 2.9% fee beats the 10% one.
  • A course creator who wants one bill: Kajabi Basic.
  • An alumni office or professional association: Hivebrite, if the budget covers $895 a month.
  • A software company running customer support forums: Bettermode or Discourse.
  • A volunteer club with no budget: Discourse's free plan, or stay where you are.

Switching is not only a pricing decision. Members, payments and content each move differently, so read the community transition plan before you commit to any of them.
