Facebook has no member transfer: people must join the new place themselves
You cannot move members from one Facebook group to another in bulk. The Facebook Help Center pages for group admins describe inviting people and preapproving them, and none of the pages we read describes a tool to transfer, merge or export a member list. Every member has to choose to join the new group, or the new platform, on their own.
That shapes the whole job. Moving a group is an invitation campaign, not a data migration.
Group to group: preapprove the old group's members, then invite
Facebook lets an admin preapprove membership requests from people who are already in the admin's other groups. Its help page gives these steps for the new group:
- Go to facebook.com/groups and select the new group.
- Open Settings, then Group Settings, and scroll to Manage memberships.
- Click Edit next to Who Is Preapproved to Join.
- Click Choose Groups and pick the old group, or Upload a File with email addresses, then save.
Facebook states that preapproving people does not invite them. They still have to ask to join, and are then approved automatically. So post the link to the new group in the old one and pin that post to the Featured section, which admins and moderators can do from the post's options.
Facebook's invite page lists three invitation methods: inviting your own Facebook friends, inviting by email (admins only, and the link expires after 28 days), and an invite link that exists only for private hidden groups and expires after 48 hours or 20 clicks. It also says each person can send only a limited number of invitations per day.
What Facebook gives a group admin, and what it does not
| Need | What the help pages describe |
|---|---|
| See who is in the group | The Members or People tab shows the member list on screen |
| Move members to another group | Not described. Preapproval of your other groups' members is the closest tool |
| Upload a list to preapprove | A .csv or .tsv file under 5 MB, up to 5,000 emails, expiring after 90 days. Each email must belong to a Facebook account |
| Download members' email addresses | Not described on the pages we read |
| Read membership question answers | Viewable per person from the member list, for answers given since July 2021 |
| Keep the old group readable | Pausing is reversible and leaves content visible. Deleting is permanent |
Mighty Networks' own help center makes the same point from the other side: it says Facebook does not give group owners access to members' email addresses.
Moving to Mighty Networks: invite link, email invites and CSV upload
Mighty Networks does not import a Facebook group. Its help center documents these ways to bring people in, from Admin > Members > Invite:
- Copy the Network's invite link and share it anywhere. Anyone who joins through it gets access. This is the link to post and pin in the Facebook group.
- Enter email addresses one by one. Each emailed invite is single-use.
- On the Launch Plan or higher, upload a CSV file. Email address is required; first and last name are optional. You confirm the list and edit the invite message before sending.
- Track results under Sent Invites, where you can resend or revoke.
Documented limits: CSV invites go out in batches of 50 to protect deliverability, a file can hold up to 100,000 records, recipients get up to three reminders (after 3, 10 and 30 days), and unused invites expire after four weeks. If access is sold through plans, invite people to the plan instead. Launch costs $79 per month with annual billing as read on 3 October 2026. Paid migration help is offered on the Growth Plan and above.
Worked example: a 2,000-member private group
Suppose a private group has 2,000 members and no email list. Because Facebook does not hand over addresses, the organizer pins a post with the Mighty invite link and a short reason to move. Separately, the organizer asks members who prefer email to share an address through a sign-up form, and 300 do.
Those 300 addresses go into one CSV file. At 50 per batch, Mighty sends them in six batches, and the automatic reminders follow at 3, 10 and 30 days. Everyone else arrives through the pinned link at their own pace. The old group stays open during this period. Our community transition guide and cutover checklist cover the timing, and a pilot with a small group is worth running first.
The most common mistake: closing the Facebook group too early
The usual error is to treat the announcement as the move and then delete or abandon the old group. Facebook's help page says deleting a group cannot be reversed, while pausing can. A paused group stops new posts and new members, but admins and members can still reach what is there. Pause only after most active members have joined the new home, and keep the pinned link in place.
If members are active and happy where they are, moving may not be worth the loss of people who never follow. The trade-offs are set out in Mighty Networks versus your existing group. Facebook's tools and Mighty's prices were read on 3 October 2026 and can change.
