How to create a membership site

Last reviewed 4 October 2026

Quick answerA membership site needs a sales page, sign-in, a paywall and member-only content. A hosted platform has all four: Mighty Networks sells member plans from Launch, with a 2% fee. For a full website, pick Kajabi.

How to create a membership site: the four parts it needs

A membership site needs four parts: a sales page, sign-in, a paywall and member-only content. Adding a plugin to a website you already run and renting a hosted platform that has all four are the two ways to build a membership site.

Mighty Networks sells member plans (subscriptions, one-time payments and tiers) from the Launch Plan, $95 a month, billed monthly, as read on 4 October 2026, and keeps a 2% transaction fee.

Here a member plan is what people join through, whether paid, free, approved by you or screened by questions. The transaction fee is the cut Mighty Networks takes from each sale; Stripe's card processing is separate.

On the Launch Plan, the four parts and the two that support them map like this.

Five steps from empty account to a site that takes payments

  1. Decide what members get and what stays public. For example, call recordings and templates go behind the paywall and the sales page stays open to everyone.
  2. Start the trial and answer the setup question. A landing page, branding and a template are generated from your answer.
  3. Create a Space for each kind of member-only content. Switch on its feature: Feed, Chat, Events or Course.
  4. To create a paid membership website, connect Stripe and create a member plan. Use the Create Plan button, choose the whole Network or chosen Spaces, switch on the Payments gate that charges through Stripe, then set a one-time payment or a subscription and write a sales pitch of up to 120 characters. Share the finished plan's link.
  5. Connect a custom domain and choose a Mighty Networks plan. Do both before day 14.

For a membership website for free, look elsewhere: Mighty Networks has no free plan on its pricing page. Patreon has no monthly price: it keeps 10% of income on its standard plan instead.

Where a platform falls short of a website, and who should pick Kajabi

Mighty Networks is not a website builder. Launch and Scale include one landing page and Growth three, and does Mighty Networks have a website builder covers what a landing page can hold. Search indexing is left out of the trial, and control of search indexing for posts and profiles needs Scale.

Pick Kajabi for a full website around the membership. Basic is $179 a month, billed monthly, or $143 a month, billed annually, with 1 website, 5 products and 2,500 contacts and no revenue share. Mighty Networks vs Kajabi compares the two. A site that already runs on WordPress can stay there and add a membership plugin instead.

The landing page, a custom domain and a member plan can all be set up in the 14-day free trial, no credit card required. Mighty Networks membership covers member plans and fees, and Mighty Networks alternatives lists eight other platforms.
